Toss in a breakout turn from Millie Bobby Brown, a smorgasbord of sci-fi action scenes, welcome supporting arcs from Matthew Modine, Sean Astin, and Paul Reiser, plus more sterling debuts from Maya Hawke and Sadie Sink, and it’s impossible to deny the modern cultural value of “Stranger Things.” It’s a good show. We all owe “Stranger Things” a debt of gratitude for Winona Ryder’s career revival, and for doing what “Manhattan” should’ve done: make David Harbour an in-demand star. Still, credit where it’s due: “Stranger Things” helped put Netflix on the map with its in-depth homage to ’80s popular culture and star-making turns from its stand-out cast members. Why you should watch it: Yes, “The Eddy,” “The OA,” and “Easy” are all better all-around series than the Duffer Brothers’ breakout hit. The biggest hits are not necessarily the best shows, so please don’t go crying in the comment section about where “Stranger Things” ranks on this list. No one is “discovering” “Stranger Things” circa 2023, but if you’re reading this list, odds are you’re either looking for something new or maybe for a chance to reinforce preexisting opinions (if so, please rethink your online behavior).
